Your College Freshman Launch Plan

Sending your teen off to college is exciting — and emotional. Between the tears and Target runs, there’s a lot to do. This checklist helps you cover the essentials: money, dorm life, academics, and mindset.

Here’s how to send them off ready — and confident.

1. Talk Money First
College is expensive — and so are the daily costs. Talk now to avoid stress later.
  • Who pays for what? Be clear on tuition, rent, food, gas, etc.
  • Build a simple budget together — include everything (even late-night pizza).
  • Review financial aid — know when it hits and what’s still owed.
  • Set up an emergency fund — even $500 in a savings account can be a safety net.
2. Set Up Smart Banking

College is often their first solo flight with money. Help them build good habits.
  • Open a student checking account
  • Set up mobile banking & alerts
  • Teach the basics of credit and debit
  • Talk about fraud prevention and password safety
Bonus Tip: Look for no-fee accounts with easy ATM access.

3. Dorm Essentials — Pack Smart, Not Heavy

Dorm shopping can get out of hand fast. Stick to the must-haves, then layer in comfort.

Pack This:
  • Twin XL bedding, towels, storage bins
  • Shower caddy, first-aid kit, surge protector
  • Photos and a favorite blanket — but no clutter
Save Money By:
  • Coordinating with roommates (no need for two fridges)
  • Waiting for sales or shopping secondhand
  • Following dorm rules to avoid buying banned items
4. Prep for Academic Success

The right habits matter more than the right laptop.

Before Move-In:

  • Submit final transcripts, vaccine records, and class registrations
  • Rent or buy used textbooks — double-check ISBNs
Encourage Good Habits:
  • Block out weekly study time
  • Use a calendar or app to track assignments and exams
  • Visit professors and tutoring centers early and often
5. Stay Connected — But Let Go

College is a major step toward independence. But they still need your support.
  • Let them take the lead — offer advice when asked
  • Check in — not just on grades, but on life and money
  • Celebrate progress, not just perfection
